Ricola - Europe SA. Produktions- und Lagergebäude
Herzog & de Meuron - Ricola packing and distribution center, Mülhouse 1993. The facade is constructed of polycarbonate panels, which are silk-screened with an image of the plant used for Ricola’s herbal cough drops taken by Karl Blossdeldt. From afar, the pattern becomes a repetitive field condition; once the viewer approaches, there becomes an increasing amount of specificity and detail to the image, up until the grainy, cellular level of the plant and material is discernible. At night, the facade is illuminated, broadcasting the image of the leaf, the life behind the company’s product, while also “visually lightening” the structure of the walls and cantilevered roof. During the day, the panels become opaque, assuming a more solid materiality similar to the adjacent concrete sidewalls.
